The elongated, weightless figures that we see in this mosaic are typical of medieval art. Look too how the drapery hides the form of the body underneath. The divinity of the emporer in the center is clearly indicated by the halo above his head. The artist shows no interest in creating figures who are individuals or who display human emotion. Another typical feature of medieval art -- the gold background -- suggests a heavenly space for these figures, who are shown participating in Holy Communion.
